Good enough just getting there?

We’re less than two days away from the Super Bowl as the two teams representing the NFC and AFC will vie for the Lombardi Trophy. But have both teams already won? The Cardinals would undoubtedly have a claim to this. After all, they do have the longest championship game drought this side of the Chicago Cubs. So, with that in mind, wouldn’t a Super Bowl win just be icing on the cake that has already been delivered? The phrase for the unlucky football career, after all, is “he didn’t get a chance to play in the Super Bowl,” not that “he didn’t win the Super Bowl.” The NFL’s championship game is probably the best example in sports where just getting to the event trumps, or at least tempers, not winning it:

1. Super Bowl (80-20, Getting a chance to play in a Super Bowl is the ultimate goal, but winning one would be nice- right Jim Kelly??)

2. Final Four (75-25, Getting your team to the Final Four is good enough in Men’s college hoops- just ask Ben Howland).

3. Rose Bowl (60-40, playing in the Rose Bowl certainly means a lot, maybe slightly more than winning one).

4. World Series (This one probably goes 50-50, but winning a World Series probably means more than just getting there.)

5. BCS Championship Game (35-65, Ohio State certainly seems content with it, but it does get old just playing in them- right Bob Stoops? ? The schools do get a lot of money out of it, though…)

6. NBA Championship (30-70, Winning an NBA Championship trumps playing in one, but getting to the NBA Finals still means something: The Suns got a championship-esque parade out of it in 1993. As Charles Barkley would attest to though, it probably means more to win one)

7. Stanley Cup (10-90, Ok, if the trophy is in the friggin’ title you better go all the way.)

Burnsy also continued the 620 Sportsline tradition of having listeners make prop bets for the Super Bowl party he usually attends, but won’t be enjoying this year.
